The Skagit River located in the North Cascades, about an hour and a half north of Seattle, offers anglers the chance to hook into steelhead fresh from the salt, feisty bull trout, sea-run cutthroat, and a variety of pacific salmon. Distinguished among west-side steelhead rivers for its special fish, a unique and powerful breed of native steelhead that tenaciously clings to their home waters. Expansive, mysterious, and powerful, you can fish it over and over again and still learn something new each time you go.

This is the largest drainage on the west slope of the Olympics, and it is the first to go out of shape because of it and the last river to return to shape because of the abundance of volcanic clay on its banks. The Queets River, at just under 53 miles long, is almost entirely within Olympic National Park, with the last 4 miles in the Quinault Reservation, so guiding and people/boat pressure is very limited. Lined by ancient old-growth forests, it tends not to change significantly from flooding; that being said when it does decide to change course, it can be dramatic, forming some of the largest log jambs you'll likely ever see. Flows can fluctuate massively within 24 hours...5,000 cfs to 80,000+ cfs, for instance, is not uncommon. Some very large salmon during fall months, chinook to 50 lbs. and coho up to 20 lbs. are not uncommon, and 40"+ steelhead call these waters home during winter and spring.

One of the nation’s great salmon streams, the Hoh River runs for 56 miles from the glaciers of Mt. Olympus through the towering Hoh River Rainforest to the wild Pacific Coast. The Hoh’s pristine upper 30 miles flow through Olympic National Park, and then the river winds through the Hoh River Recreation and Conservation Area. It then flows through the Hoh Indian Reservation, emptying directly into the sea in one of the most natural major river mouths on the West Coast.

Approximately 90 min. from Seattle, the Sauk is a free-flowing river and one of the primary tributaries of the Skagit. Unparalleled in its beauty, thanks to a rugged character and remote feel, the Sauk River ranks as one of the top experiences in Washington fly fishing. Not only is it a part of the Wild and Scenic Rivers System, but it also boasts some of the most storied and scenic waters anywhere on the Steelhead Coast. Prone to cloudiness due to sediment runoff in wet weather, its waters are indeed temperamental. However, if you catch the river at the right level, you’ll see a tint of the river known to local anglers as “Sauk green”—the perfect level of clarity to make a fresh run of grabby fish feel secure. Hooking into a chrome native steelhead is no longer as common as it used to be due to early closures, but getting to know the Sauk in all its seasons and moods is always worth the trip.

Of the glacier rivers of the Olympic Peninsula, this is an anomaly; a large natural lake separates the upper river, accessible to the public, and the lower river, which is entirely within the Quinault reservation. The upper river is fairly short, about eight river miles to the North and East Fork confluence, with minimal and difficult access by boat. Walk-in access is easiest in the upper stretches, with the road being reasonably close to the north and south shore roads. Native sockeye, chinook, and coho are present. The upper river clears quickly after high water events and still produces some very large steelhead.

The West Fork Humptulips River flows through the Olympic National Forest at the southwest corner of the Olympic Peninsula. The West Fork is outstanding habitat for anadromous fish, supporting runs of chinook, coho, chum, and steelhead. Healthy salmon runs make the Humptulips prime habitat for bald eagles as well.

The Satsop River is one of the best Chinook salmon fishing rivers in Western Washington. The Satsop is a tributary fork of the Chehalis River and has many tributary forks itself. There are three tributary forks — the East, West, and middle forks — that are actually much longer than the main stream itself.
