My name is Michael Stack and I am the owner and guide of Fishtales Outfitting. I am a seasoned guide with over 25 years of experience.
As a child, I spent countless hours in the woods with my grandfather, a passionate outdoorsman and Connecticut State Park constable. His love for the outdoors rubbed off on me, and I developed a deep respect and appreciation for nature.
In 1995, I embarked on a journey to Alaska, where I guided my first season in Katmai National Park, chasing giant rainbows and Pacific Salmon alongside Alaskan Coastal Brown Bears. The following spring, I found myself in Montana, where my dream of becoming a fly fishing guide became a reality.
Over the years, I have gained an intimate knowledge of the waters of southwest Montana. I am eager to share my passion for fly fishing and the beauty of this region with you.
Whether you are a seasoned angler or a beginner, I offer a range of guided fishing trips tailored to your skill level and preferences. From drift boat trips on the Madison and Yellowstone Rivers to wade fishing on smaller streams, I have something for everyone.

My father and I had a wonderful 1/2 day float on the Madison with FishTales outfitting last week. He is one of the top guides I have fished with in any situation. Mike did a great job of instruction for my 73 year old father who had never fly fished before and was only able to sit (not stand) in the boat. He was excellent at positioning the drift boat to give dad the best opportunity resulting in multiple hookups and several trout landed - dad's first fly rod fish of any kind! Mike's patience, knowledge, sense of humor, and kindness were on display throughout the day - he even laughed at dad's stories! While doing all of that Mike also managed to keep a slightly more experienced angler busy and productive by pointing out runs and pockets to cast to, honing my technique and teaching me how to fish streamers on the Madison. Mike's knowledge of the river allowed us to be prepared for the upcoming pockets of fish holding water in time to make the appropriate casts and his expertise in the drift boat was evidenced by his positioning the boat to allow the most productive drifts, including long drifts of the fly near undercut banks. All of this with a friendly, easy-going guide and beautiful scenery made for an outstanding trip. I hope to fish with Mike Stack and FishTales Outfitting again if I get back to the area. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a great fishing experience.

My husband & I had the fishing experience of a lifetime! We had never been fly fishing before. Our captain patiently showed us the tricks, expertly navigated the boat, and helped each step of the way. The views were incredible and fly fishing was awesome! We found it easy to catch fish & loved the entire process. Lunch was great & we felt well taken care of. This was trip was our "splurge" for ourselves and was worth every penny. We will absolutely do it again next year!

I had an excellent day on the river. It was my first time fly fishing and my guide Garet was really patient and gave me just enough information at the right time to make me feel confident and relaxed. He helped me catch some big feisty browns and a rainbow. It was an amazing experience and I’m hooked.

Fishtales Guide Lamont Carter delivered a great day for me and my son on the Beaverhead River. We launched on the river early, beating most of the other boats and hit the best holes and buckets first. Lamont encouraged us to periodically get out of the boat and wet-wade to the best spots for casting and drifting through those deep runs where the big browns hide. And when they hit, he was a excited as we were! It doesn’t get much better than that! Jon and Ben Jarvis

Had a fun morning fishing with guides Jason and Zack. They were both knowledgeable of the river and were great instructors working with we novice fky fishermen. Looking forward to fishing with them again.

Great outfit! Our trip on the Yellowstone River was the stuff of legends! Michael put us with Garet, one of the best guides I've ever had. My brother and I caught over 50 fish, including. a 19" rainbow. Highly recommended!

Michael and Dan with FishTales made this trip so amazing for me and my kids. It was our first time fly fishing and booking with Michael was smooth and stress free. Dan took us out on the river and made sure my 13yr got into it and was prepared with a little pole for my 5yr. I would recommend to anyone looking for stress-free, fun river trip.

Had a great time on the Big Hole throwing streamers and hooking into some quality browns. This is my second time with FishTales and once again the experience was nothing short of amazing!

Awesome trip with Chris from Fishtales Outfitting. He went above and beyond during our fly fishing trip on the Madison River. We will definitely book with him again.
